Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He camped, asked for water for ablution, and performed ablution. Then the call to prayer was given and he led the prayer. After finishing the prayer and turning (to the people), he saw a man standing apart, who had not prayed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Why did you not pray with the congregation?" He replied: O Messenger of Allah! I became impure (in a state of janabah) and there is no water. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Use earth (for tayammum), that is sufficient for you."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 765) That is, perform tayammum, it is sufficient. From this it is understood that in the absence of water, tayammum is sufficient in place of ablution (wudu) and ritual bath (ghusl). The command of Allah is also: «﴿فَلَمْتَجِدُوامَاءًفَتَيَمَّمُواصَعِيدًاطَيِّبًافَامْسَحُوابِوُجُوهِكُمْوَأَيْدِيكُمْمِنْهُ﴾ [المائده : 6]» meaning: "If you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth, and wipe it over your faces and hands."
