أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، أَخْبَرَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ حَدَّثَنِي عَطِيَّةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْكَلَاعِيُّ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: "إِنَّمَا الْعَيْنَانِ وِكَاءُ السَّهِ، فَإِذَا نَامَتْ الْعَيْنُ، اسْتَطْلَقَ الْوِكَاءُ"، قِيلَ لِأَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ: تَقُولُ بِهِ ؟، قَالَ: لَا، إِذَا نَامَ قَائِمًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ الْوُضُوءُ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the eyes are the tie of the anus, so when the eyes sleep, the tie is loosened." Imam Darimi was asked: Do you also say this? He replied: No, if someone falls asleep while standing, his ablution will not be broken.
Brief Explanation

From this hadith, it is understood that ablution (wudu) is nullified by sleep.
Other authentic ahadith clarify that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) would fall asleep while sitting, waiting for the prayer, and then perform the obligatory prayer without renewing their ablution. From this, it is established that falling asleep while sitting does not nullify ablution, whereas sleeping deeply while lying down does nullify ablution.
