Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the expedition of Tabuk. One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with his companions, relating a hadith. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the sun rises high, let a person get up and perform ablution well, then pray two rak‘ahs; he will come out of his sins as if his mother had just given birth to him today." Sayyiduna Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Praise be to Allah who granted me the opportunity to hear this hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was sitting in front of me, said: Are you amazed at this hadith? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said something even better than this before you came. I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, what is that? So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution well, then raises his gaze towards the sky and says: «أَشْهَدُأَنْلَّاإِلٰهَإِلَّااللهُوَحْدَهُلَاشَرِيْكَلَهُوَأَشْهَدُأَنَّمُحَمَّدًاعَبْدُهُوَرَسُوْلُهُ», then the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever of them he wishes."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 736 to 739)
In Tirmidhi, after «أَشْهَدُأَنْلَّاإِلٰهَإِلَّااللّٰهُوَحْدَهُلَاشَرِيْكَلَهُوَأَشْهَدُأَنَّمُحَمَّدًاعَبْدُهُوَرَسُوْلَهُ», there is this addition: «اَللّٰهُمَّاجْعَلْنِيْمِنَالتَّوَّابِيْنَوَاجْعَلْنِيْمِنَالْمُتَطَهِّرِيَْن.»
The meaning of the entire supplication is: "I bear witness that there is no true deity except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is indeed His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among those who repent and among those who purify themselves."
Reciting this supplication after completing ablution (wudu) is Sunnah, and it is not necessary to raise one's gaze towards the sky.
