Abd Khair said: I saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution and wiping over both his shoes, then he said: If I had not seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) doing as you have seen me (wiping), I would have thought that wiping the soles is more appropriate than the upper part of the foot. Imam Darimi Abu Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This hadith is abrogated by « ﴿وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ﴾ » [المائده: 6/5], because in «﴿وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ﴾» there is the command to wash the feet. Therefore, it is not correct to wipe over the feet during ablution. Just as the Shia do not wash their feet in ablution but rather wipe over them, this is incorrect.
