Hadith 689

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ: "لَا يَرْفَعُ ثَوْبَهُ حَتَّى يَدْنُوَ مِنْ الْأَرْضِ"، قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّد: هُوَ أَدَبٌ، وَهُوَ أَشْبَهُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ الْمُغِيرَةِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to relieve himself, he would not lift his garment until he was close to the ground. Imam Darimi Abu Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is also among the etiquettes of relieving oneself and is similar to the hadith of Mughira.

English Translation:

Here, by "mursal" what is meant is "munqati‘" (disconnected).
Its explanation has been given by Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah himself, that Al-A‘mash did not hear from Anas radi Allahu anhu.
Generally, in technical terminology, "mursal" is:
A hadith in which, from the end of the chain, the narrator after the Tabi‘i is omitted.
Such a narration is weak because the continuity of the chain (ittisal al-isnad) is missing, which is an essential condition for a sahih (authentic) hadith.
Likewise, the omitted narrator is not identified,
and it is possible that he is someone other than a Companion (sahabi).
In this case, the likelihood of its weakness increases.
And "inqita‘" (disconnection) means that a narrator is missing in the chain.

Benefits and Issues
This narration is weak; however, it is still better that a person should exercise utmost caution in avoiding nakedness (being unclothed) even in seclusion, because Allah Ta'ala is most deserving that one should feel modesty before Him.
