Hadith 682

Ibn Buraidah narrated from his father, Sayyiduna Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform ablution for every prayer, until when Makkah was conquered, he (peace be upon him) performed all the prayers with one ablution, and wiped over his leather socks. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have seen you do something which you never used to do before? He (peace be upon him) replied: I have done this intentionally.

Abu Muhammad Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Thus, the action of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates that the meaning of this verse «﴿إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ﴾» [مائده: 6/5] is that ablution is obligatory for every prayer upon one who is in a state of impurity, and not for one who is already in a state of ablution. And of the same kind is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): “Ablution is only due to impurity.” And Allah knows best.
