It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat what was given as a gift, but would not accept charity. A Jewish woman from Khaybar presented a roasted, poisoned goat as a gift. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Bishr bin Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) ate some of it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) withdrew his hand and said: "This goat has informed me that it has been poisoned." As a result, Sayyiduna Bishr bin Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away due to its effect. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for the woman and asked: "Why did you do this?" The woman replied: "If you are a (true) Prophet, it will not harm you, and if you are a king, we will be relieved of you." During his final illness, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "I still feel the effect and pain from the meat I ate at Khaybar, and now the time has come for my artery to burst."
