أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ السَّلَامِ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ السُّوقَ فَسَاوَمَ رَجُلًا بِثَوْبٍ، فَقَالَ: "هُوَ لَكَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا، وَاللَّهِ لَوْ كَانَ غَيْرَكَ مَا أَعْطَيْتُهُ، فَقَالَ: فَعَلْتُمُوهَا، فَمَا رُئِيَ بَعْدَهَا مُشْتَرِيًا مِنْ السُّوقِ، وَلَا بَائِعًا حَتَّى لَحِقَ بِاللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ".
It is narrated from Abdul A'la that Imam Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, entered the market. He bargained with a man over the price of a cloth, so the man said: "For you, it is for such-and-such (price); by Allah, if it were anyone other than you, I would not give it at this price." Imam Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Why did you do that?" After that, he was not seen buying or selling in the market until he met Allah, the Exalted.
