أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ الْمُكْتِبُ، حَدَّثَنَا قَاسِمُ هُوَ ابْنُ مَالِكٍ، حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، قَالَ: "كَانَ إِذَا جَلَسَ إِلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ أَوْ الرَّجُلَانِ، قَامَ فَتَنَحَّى".
Laith narrated that when one or two people would sit with Imam Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him), he would stand up and move away from there.

From all these narrations, the humility and modesty of the pious predecessors (salaf saliheen) becomes evident. They absolutely did not like fame; that is why they did not like people to gather in crowds before or behind them.
