أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شِهَابٍ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لَهُ حِينَ مَاتَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: لَوْ قَعَدْتَ فَعَلَّمْتَ النَّاسَ السُّنَّةَ ؟، فَقَالَ: "أَتُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُوطَأَ عَقِبِي ؟".
It is narrated from Ibrahim: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, it was said to Alqamah (bin Qais): "If only you would sit (in Ibn Mas'ud's place) and teach the people the Sunnah as he did." He replied: "Do you want my heel to be crushed?" (i.e., do you want me to fall into tribulation because of those who come after me?)
