Hadith 499

Ibn Shubrumah said: I heard Imam Sha’bi, may Allah have mercy on him, say: I have never written black over white, and I have never requested any person to repeat a hadith to me.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 498)

From this, their strength of memory becomes evident. From all these reports, it is understood that the noble predecessors (aslaf kiram) gave preference to the strength of memory over the writing of hadith.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has written in [فتح الباري 208/1] that the noble predecessors have said: A group of the Companions (sahabah kiram) disliked writing anything; they wished that just as they had preserved the hadith of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in their hearts, others too should memorize it and not write it down. However, when they observed laziness and lack of diligence among the seekers of knowledge, and saw weakness of resolve, they feared that the knowledge of Prophethood would be lost, so they permitted writing.

As will be mentioned in the next chapter.
