أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هِلَالٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ يَقُولُ: كَانَ يُقَالُ: "حَدِّثْ الْقَوْمَ مَا أَقْبَلُوا عَلَيْكَ بِوُجُوهِهِمْ، فَإِذَا الْتَفَتُوا، فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ لَهُمْ حَاجَاتٍ".
Abu Hilal al-Rasi said: I heard Imam Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, say: It is said that narrate hadith to people when they are attentively inclined towards you, and if they turn here and there, then understand that they have some needs (i.e., they are not fully attentive for listening to hadith).
