أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ أُمَيٍّ، عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ، قَالَ: "إِنَّمَا سُمُّوا أَصْحَابَ الْأَهْوَاءِ، لِأَنَّهُمْ يَهْوُونَ فِي النَّارِ".
Imam Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The slaves of desires and the self are named so because they will be thrown into Hell.
Brief Explanation
(«الأهواء : هَوَي» is the plural of «هَوَيٰ يَهْوِي», which means to fall down. Thus, the people of desires (ashab al-ahwa) fall before their base desires, and in the same way, they will fall into Hell, as the famous proverb goes: «الجزاء من جنس العمل» (As you sow, so shall you reap).
From all these traditions, it is established that one should neither sit with the people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah), philosophers, those who follow their base desires, and those enslaved by their passions, nor should one listen to their words.)
