Hadith 409

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ ابْنِ شُبْرُمَةَ، عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ، قَالَ: "إِنَّمَا سُمِّيَ الْهَوَى لِأَنَّهُ يَهْوِي بِصَاحِبِهِ".
Imam Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The desire of the self is called «هويٰ» because it keeps dragging its possessor down (into Hell).
