Hadith 4

It is narrated from Abu Raja that in the days of ignorance, if we found a good stone, we would start worshipping it, and if we did not find a good stone, we would gather some sand, then bring a she-camel with plenty of milk, spread her legs wide, and milk her over the heap of sand until it was well soaked. Then, as long as we stayed at that place, we would worship that heap.

Imam Darimi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: «صفي» refers to a she-camel that gives a lot of milk, «فتفاج» means the posture of a she-camel when she spreads her legs to be milked, and for this reason, «فج» refers to a wide road, the plural of which is «فجاج».

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 1 to 4)

In these narrations (Hadiths 1 to 4), there is mention of actions from the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) such as killing children, worshipping stones, and raising dogs, all of which Islam has categorically prohibited.

From the first hadith, «الاسلام يهدم ماقبله» is supported, meaning that after accepting Islam, the sins committed prior to Islam are forgiven.

The mercy and compassion of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is evident in that, upon hearing the painful story, he wept.

In the third narration, the helplessness and powerlessness of the false deities is made apparent—they cannot do anything to defend themselves, so how could they help anyone else? (And Allah knows best).
