Muhammad bin Sirin, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The pious predecessors used to consider these tones in the recitation of the Qur'an as an innovation.

Reciting the Qur’an with melody or tune (lahn or sur) has been disliked by many scholars, as has been mentioned previously. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has written in "Al-Tibyan", p. 99: Reciting with melody (lahn, sur) has been considered disliked (makruh) by Imam Shafi’i rahimahullah; there is also another opinion of non-dislike, and some companions of Shafi’i have said: The recitation in which there is excessive stretching and artificiality is disliked (makruh). Reciting the Qur’an with the manners of tajwid and recitation, in which there is no singing voice, is not disliked (makruh).
