It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever does not recite the Qur’an in a melodious voice is not from among us.” Ibn ‘Uyaynah said: By «لم يتغن» is meant «يستغني». Abu Muhammad Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: People call Abu Nuhaik as ‘Ubaydullah bin Abi Nuhaik.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 3518 to 3520)
There are various opinions of the scholars regarding the interpretation of «مَنْلَمْيَتَغَنَّبِالْقُرْآنِ». Some have said: Whoever does not recite the Noble Qur’an with a good voice, does not observe the rules of elongation (madd) and emphasis (shadd), provided that no letter is omitted or added, and does not introduce melody (i.e., does not recite it in the manner of singing), then he is not included. Some scholars have said: Whoever, after reciting the Qur’an, does not become indifferent to the world or to poetry and eloquence, he is not from among us. Some scholars have said: It was customary among the Arabs to sing in gatherings and during travel; now, in its place, this Qur’an has been given, so that the Qur’an should be recited—this is the song of Islam. Some have said: What is meant is to recite it aloud. (Wahidi, with adaptation) By «لَيْسَمِنَّا» is meant: A person who does not recite the Qur’an with melody (tarannum) is not upon our Islamic way.
