Hadith 3458

Abu al-Hasan Muhajir said: During the time of Ziyad, a companion came to Kufa. I heard him narrating a hadith that I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the road and my knee was touching the blessed knee of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He heard a companion reciting « ﴿قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ﴾ ». The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "This person has become free from shirk (polytheism)." He heard another person reciting «﴿قُلْ هُوَ اللّٰهُ أَحَدٌ﴾», so he said: "He has been forgiven."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 3457)

From this hadith, the virtue of these two surahs and of these two companions is established.

The statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that this person has become free from shirk (polytheism) and has been forgiven is itself proof that whoever recites these surahs with faith, certainty, and sound belief, is, with conviction, deserving of these lofty ranks. And Allah Ta'ala had informed the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that these pure souls had, from the depths of their hearts, undertaken the affirmation of Allah Ta'ala’s oneness and worship of Him alone, and had openly declared their disavowal of shirk. Therefore, Allah Ta'ala, by freeing them from shirk and granting them forgiveness, made them deserving of Paradise.
