Hadith 3406

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Alhamdulillah is Umm al-Qur’an, Umm al-Kitab, and Sab‘ al-Mathani.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 3403 to 3406)

In the Noble Qur’an and the Ahadith of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), multiple names of Surah al-Fatihah are mentioned, of which four names have been cited above. It is called al-Fatihah or Fatihat al-Kitab because, in the writing of the Mushaf, this Surah is written first. In prayer (salah) as well, after the opening supplication (du‘a istiftah), its recitation comes first. It is also called Umm al-Kitab, Umm al-Qur’an, or Asas al-Qur’an because it is the essence of the teachings of the Noble Qur’an. Its name is also ash-Shifa’, as mentioned in the first hadith of this chapter. Ar-Ruqyah is also a name of this Surah because the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would recite it and blow over the sick and ill. It is also called al-Wafiyah and al-Kafiyah. This noble Surah has many virtues.
