أَخْبَرَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ عُيَيْنَةَ، يَقُولُ: "يُرَادُ لِلْعِلْمِ الْحِفْظُ، وَالْعَمَلُ، وَالِاسْتِمَاعُ، وَالْإِنْصَاتُ، وَالنَّشْرُ".
Ubaidullah bin Saeed said: I heard Sufyan bin Uyaynah say: Knowledge means memorization, practice, listening, silence, and conveying.
Brief Explanation

That is, whoever acquires knowledge, memorizes it, acts upon it, listens to it in silence, and then conveys it to others—only then will he be called a scholar (‘alim); otherwise, he will not.
