Hadith 3397

‘Amir bin Wathilah narrated that Nafi‘ bin ‘Abd al-Harith met Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) at ‘Usfan, whom Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed as governor over Makkah. The Commander of the Faithful, Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), asked: “Whom have you appointed as your deputy over the people of the valley (the people of Makkah)?” Nafi‘ replied: “I have appointed Ibn Abza as my deputy over them.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: “Who is Ibn Abza?” He replied: “He is one of our freed slaves.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “You have appointed a freed slave as their leader?” He replied: “O Commander of the Faithful! He is a reciter of the Qur’an and knowledgeable about the laws of inheritance.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Indeed, Allah elevates many people by this Qur’an and lowers others by it.’”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 3396)

The meaning is that those who are obedient to this Qur’an will attain authority in this world and Paradise in the Hereafter, and those who deny it will face humiliation in this world and punishment in the Hereafter.

The statement of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam proved to be one hundred percent true: that nation of the Arabs, among whom there were only a few literate people, ruled over a considerable part of the world for centuries. Allah Ta’ala also granted honor to the mawali (non-Arab freedmen) and slaves after they entered Islam. The status of Sayyiduna Bilal al-Habashi radi Allahu anhu is such that the Messenger of Islam sallallahu alayhi wa sallam hears his footsteps ahead of him in Paradise. Similarly, this freed slave Ibn Abza, due to the Noble Qur’an, becomes the governor of the people of Makkah.

Ameen.
