Hadith 3372

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The person who recites the Qur’an and then forgets it (after memorizing it), will meet Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection with a severed hand.” (That is, he will meet Him empty-handed or speechless.) Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: ‘Isa: is Ibn Faid.

Brief Explanation
(Imam Abu Dawood rahimahullah has mentioned this hadith in «كتاب الصلاة، باب التشديد فيمن حفظ القرآن ثم نسيه», from which it is understood that what is meant by “reciting the Qur’an” is to memorize it and then forget it. If this hadith were authentic, there would be a severe warning for those memorizers (huffaz) who memorize the Qur’an and then forget it.

But this hadith is not authentic. In the Noble Qur’an as well, it is stated: «﴿وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكًا .....﴾ [طه : 124-126]». Some people take this to mean forgetting the Qur’an after reciting or memorizing it, but Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah refuted this opinion and explained that the hadith is weak, and what is meant is to turn one’s back on the Noble Qur’an, to abandon its teachings, and not to act upon it. The life of such a person who turns away from it will remain in hardship, and he will be raised blind on the Day of Resurrection. He will say: “O my Lord! In the world I used to have sight, so why have I been raised blind?” The Divine response will be: “This is because you were heedless of My verses, so now you will not be granted any reception at all.”

May Allah Ta’ala save all of us from this humiliation and disgrace, and grant us the ability to act upon the Noble Qur’an. Ameen.
