Hadith 3313

أَخْبَرَنَا أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ: أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ "أَوْصَى لِأُمَّهَاتِ أَوْلَادِهِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ آلَافٍ، أَرْبَعَةِ آلَافٍ، لِكُلِّ امْرَأَةٍ مِنْهُنَّ".
It is narrated from Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) made a bequest of four thousand for the mothers of his children, four thousand for each of those women.
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 3312)
By «أمهات أولاده» is meant those slave women with whom their master has had intercourse and from whom children have been born. There is no fixed share for them; therefore, in a will, the master can allocate some portion for them.
