Hadith 3281

حَدَّثَنَا يَعْلَى، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل، عَنْ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ يُقَالُ: "إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُحْرَمُ بَرَكَةَ مَالِهِ فِي حَيَاتِهِ، فَإِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ، تَزَوَّدَ بِفَجْرَةٍ".
Qais (Ibn Abi Hazim) said: It used to be said that a man is deprived of the blessing of his wealth during his life, and when the time of death comes, he spends abundantly.
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 3278 to 3281)
In some manuscripts, there is «تزود بخوه», and in some, there is «بفجرة» (that is, «كثرة عطاءه»), and in some, there is «بعجزه». The meaning is that a person acts with miserliness during his lifetime, and when he is about to die, then he opens the doors of generosity and benevolence. The scholars have regarded this as disliked, as has been mentioned above.
Also, in this narration, there is encouragement for giving charity and alms (sadaqah wa khayrat) in the state of health and well-being, which is a cause of mercy and blessing and a means of reward.
