Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 3213)
That is, in the aforementioned verse it is stated: When death approaches any of you and he possesses wealth, then making a suitable bequest (wasiyyah) for parents or close relatives is obligatory; this is incumbent upon the believers.
So in this verse, "khayran" refers to wealth, no matter how much it is.
From these ahadith and traditions, it is established that if someone possesses wealth and property, then he should certainly make a bequest, and treat his close relatives well so that after his death, people may benefit from his kindness and pray for him.
It has been mentioned above in the hadith that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not make any bequest. Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah A’ishah (radi Allahu anha) also stated that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not make any bequest regarding anything. What is meant by this is a bequest regarding wealth, because in this very hadith of Sayyidah A’ishah (radi Allahu anha), it is mentioned that the Prophet of Islam Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not leave behind any dirham or dinar for which he could have made a bequest. However, regarding religious matters, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made numerous bequests, such as: taking care of the prayer, and (regarding) slaves and slave-girls, «اِتَّقُوْاالدُّنْيَاوَالتَّقُوْاالنِّسَاءَ», avoiding the world, and being cautious regarding women, not making my grave an idol that is worshipped, holding firmly to the Book and the Sunnah—you will not go astray, and so on.
From this, it is understood that one should make bequests to one’s children and family regarding religious matters.
