Hadith 3161

حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: "لَيْسَ مِنْ مَوْلُودٍ إِلَّا يَسْتَهِلُّ، وَاسْتِهْلَالُهُ بِعَصْرِ الشَّيْطَانُ بَطْنَهُ، فَيَصِيحُ، إِلَّا عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ".
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Every newborn child cries, and his crying is because the devil presses his belly, so he begins to cry, except for Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him).
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 3152 to 3161)
From this hadith, it is understood that every child cries at the time of birth, and that the child cries because of the pricking of Satan, and from the very moment of birth, Satan begins to harm the son of Adam, except for ‘Isa (alayhis salam), because Maryam (alayhas salam), his mother, had supplicated: «﴿وَإِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ﴾ [آل عمران : 36]» Therefore, Satan could not reach them, and both mother and son remained safe from his evil.

This reality is established from the Noble Qur’an and the Prophetic hadiths, so we believe and affirm it; there is no room for doubt in this matter.
The purpose of mentioning this hadith here is that every child cries at the time of birth, and this is a sign of his being alive. If he does not make a sound, he is either ill or dead, and every child who makes a sound will be an heir, and if he dies after crying, his funeral prayer will also be performed.
