Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A person cannot become a scholar until he does not envy one who is above him, does not consider one who is below him as insignificant, and does not seek compensation for his knowledge.

To feel envy (hasad) towards someone superior to oneself in religious matters in such a way that one wishes Allah Ta’ala would grant him similar knowledge or wealth so that he may spend it in the path of Allah, this is permissible, as is mentioned in the hadith: «لَاحَسَدَإِلَّافِياثْنَتَيْنِ ......»[بخاري 73], [مسلم 816].
