Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2964)
In inheritance, the original maternal grandmother (umm al-umm) is the maternal grandmother (nani), while the paternal grandmother (umm al-ab, dadi) is included under this ruling.
If the maternal grandmother (nani) is not the mother of the deceased, then she alone will be the heir. If, along with her, the deceased’s paternal grandmother (dadi) is also present, then both will equally divide the one-sixth share.
Some of the Companions (Sahabah) have considered the grandmother (jaddah) as an heir along with her son, such as Amir al-Mu’minin Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas‘ud, and Sayyiduna Imran ibn Husayn radi Allahu anhum and others. However, some Companions did not consider the maternal or paternal grandmother (nani or dadi) as an heir in the presence of the son, such as Amir al-Mu’minin Sayyiduna Uthman, Sayyiduna Ali, and Sayyiduna Zayd radi Allahu anhum.
