Hadith 2908

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ الْمُسَيَّبِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: كَانَ يَقُولُ: "مَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيَرَانِي أَنْ أُفَضِّلَ أُمًّا عَلَى أَبٍ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: May Allah not show me the day that I give preference to the mother over the father.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Ahadith 2902 to 2908)

The meaning of this narration is that in the aforementioned issue, the father will receive two shares due to being an ‘asabah (agnate), and the mother will receive only one share, that is, one-third, as allotted by Allah Ta’ala. May Allah Ta’ala forbid that I give the mother preference over the father and grant her a larger share; that is, by giving the mother one-third of the entire estate, the mother would receive two shares and the father only one share.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma used to say this, and for this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu refuted him.
