Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2894)
To attribute oneself to another family or tribe, or to deny being a member of one’s own tribe or family despite being so, both are prohibited (haram). For example, if someone from the Bazzaz, Hajjam, or Haddad tribe, out of shame, denies his own tribe, or attributes his name to a tribe to which he does not belong—such as adopting the titles Quraishi, Hashimi, or Sayyid so that people associate themselves with these noble tribes in order to gain honor and respect—then doing so is considered disbelief (kufr) with Allah Ta’ala, a lie, and a fabrication. One must avoid this.
