Hadith 2883

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The people of Hell will be thrown into Hell, and it will say: «هَلْ مِنْ مَزِيْدٍ؟» 'Are there any more? Are there any more?' It will say this three times, until Allah, the Lord of Glory, places His blessed foot upon it, then it will contract and say: 'Enough, enough, enough.'"

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2882)

From this hadith, the attribute of Allah Ta'ala's "foot" (qadam) is established, which in some narrations is mentioned with the word "leg" (rijl). The belief and faith of the scholars of the Salaf is that Allah Ta'ala has a "foot" (qadam), but its modality (kayfiyyah) is unknown to us, nor is it permissible to delve into its specifics. Some people have interpreted (ta'wil) "foot" (qadam) and said that by "placing the foot" is meant to humiliate it, or that it could refer to the foot of some other creation, or that "foot" could mean a place.

But all these interpretations are invalid. The creed of Ahl al-Hadith in this matter is exactly what the righteous predecessors (salaf salihin) have said: that this is an attribute of the Lord of the Worlds, just as hearing (sam‘), sight (basar), face (wajh), eye (‘ayn), and hand (yad) are attributes of Allah Ta'ala.

Imam Darimi rahimahullah has mentioned selected authentic ahadith regarding Paradise and Hell in this book with brevity. From this, his creed, school, and methodology become evident. On the other hand, it creates longing for Paradise and fear of Hell. A few ahadith in this chapter are weak, but their supporting evidences (shawahid) are present in the Sahihayn and other important books of hadith.

May Allah Ta'ala bestow His mercy and grace upon the author, raise his ranks for his service to the Sunnah of the Messenger «على صاحبه الصلاة والسلام», and may Allah Ta'ala grant the translator and the reader the ability to follow in his footsteps and methodology. Ameen.
