Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Paradise is surrounded by things that are disliked by the soul, and Hell is surrounded by desires of the self.”
Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2876)
By «مكاره» are meant those matters which a Muslim has been commanded to perform or to abstain from, and those matters are extremely disagreeable and difficult for the human soul, such as worship, spiritual discipline, perseverance in acts of worship, patience over their hardships, restraining anger, forgiveness and forbearance, charity and striving (jihad); all these actions are burdensome upon the soul, and Paradise is attained by performing these very actions. And by desires (shahawat) are meant those matters which have been prohibited in the Shariah, and the human soul finds pleasure in them and desires them, such as drinking wine, fornication (zina), staring at non-mahram women, backbiting, lying, games and amusements that make one neglectful of prayer, and other forms of idle entertainment, singing, music, etc. All these are among the pleasures and desires, and the soul is strongly inclined towards them. By committing these acts, one attains Hellfire, i.e., by performing burdensome acts of worship one becomes deserving of Paradise, and by indulging in carnal desires one becomes deserving of Hellfire.
