Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2872 to 2874)
There is a hadith agreed upon by both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: Whoever eats seven ‘ajwah dates in the morning on an empty stomach, neither poison nor magic will harm him that day. See: [بخاري 5445] and [مسلم 2047].
The Orientalists objected to this hadith, saying that it is possible for such a substance to exist in these dates that would neutralize poison, but what connection does magic have with it?
In response, Shaykh Mustafa al-Siba‘i rahimahullah has written a very valuable and interesting discussion in «السنة و مكانتها», in which he has established that modern science has also acknowledged that there is such a lethal substance present in dates that neutralizes the effect of poison. As for the matter of magic, a person’s faith and conviction should be that this is the statement of the Messenger of Guidance, the Physician of the World, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who did not speak from his own desire, and this is a revelation from Allah Ta‘ala. With this certainty and faith, whoever eats seven dates (‘ajwah) early in the morning will, with absolute certainty, not be affected by poison or magic that day.
The noble Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah also practiced upon this hadith. After completing the Fajr prayer and lessons, when he would return home, the very first thing he would do was eat seven dates and then have milk for breakfast.
And the respected Shaykh used to say that this benefit is present in every type of date of Madinah Tayyibah, because in some narrations, the general dates of Madinah are mentioned.
