Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman entered Hell because of a cat. It was said to her: You neither fed it nor gave it water, nor did you let it go so that it could eat the insects of the earth."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2848)
Islam teaches gentleness and compassion. In the aforementioned hadith, a woman was sent to Hell for causing suffering to an animal. From this, it is derived that if a person, despite having the ability and means, does not provide food and water to any living being, and that being dies of hunger or thirst, then this crime can become a cause for that person to enter Hell.
Subhan Allah! What a teaching this is—if such treatment towards animals is so grave, then oppression and injustice towards a human being is an even greater crime. The killing of a single person has been considered in the Noble Qur’an as equivalent to the killing of all mankind: «﴿فَكَأَنَّمَاقَتَلَالنَّاسَجَمِيعًا﴾ [المائده : 32]».
It should be noted that even a sacrificial animal should be given food and water before being slaughtered, as mentioned in the hadith: «فَإِذَاقَتَلْتُمْفَأَحْسِنُوْاالْقِتْلَةَوَإِذَاذَبَحْتُمْفَأَحْسِنُوْاالذِّبْحَأَوْكَمَاقَالَالنَّبِيِّصَلَّياللّٰهُعَلَيْهِوَسَلَّمَ.».
