Hadith 2848

Bahz bin Hakim narrated from his father, who narrated from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “There was a servant among the servants of Allah who had no religion or faith. He remained in this state of irreligion until most of his life had passed and only a little was left. Then he realized that he had not done any good deed for Allah, so he called his sons and said: ‘How do you find me as a father?’ They said: ‘Very good, O our father!’ He said: ‘I will not leave my wealth with any of you; I will take it all from you, unless I command you to do something and you act upon it?’ Then he took a firm promise from them. By my Lord, he said: ‘When I die, take me and burn me in the fire, and when I am burnt and become coal, crush me and scatter my ashes in the air.’ (In some narrations it is mentioned: ‘When a strong wind blows, scatter half of the ashes in the sea and half in the air.’) He said: ‘By my Lord! After his death, his sons did exactly as he had instructed.’ He was brought back to his original state and presented before the Lord of the worlds. Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘What made you choose the fire?’ He replied: ‘Your fear, O my Lord.’ Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘I see you as one who fears Me.’” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “His repentance was accepted.” (That is, he was forgiven).

Imam Darimi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: The meaning of «يَبْتَئِرُ» is «يَدَّخِرُ», that is, something stored for the Hereafter.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2847)

The person mentioned in this hadith was from among the Children of Israel, and in one narration from Bukhari, it is stated that he was a grave-cloth thief. However, he had the fear of Allah in his heart, believing that Allah would certainly cast him into Hell because he had never performed any good deed. Yet, he was ignorant of the fact that Allah, exalted is He, is capable of all things. In order to save himself from the punishment of the Hereafter, he devised this plan. Allah, exalted is He, gathered every single particle of him from land and sea and made him stand for reckoning. And observe the mercy of the Lord: despite his ignorance, foolishness, and lack of good deeds, Allah, exalted is He, forgave him in exchange for just this much faith and fear of Allah.
