Hadith 2845

As-Suddi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: I asked Murrah (al-Hamdani) about the meaning of this verse: «﴿وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا . . . . . . ﴾» (Maryam: 71/19): (That is: There is none among you but will pass over Hell), Murrah narrated that Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated a hadith to them, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "All people will pass over Hell, then they will come out of it according to their deeds. So the first person will come out like a flash of lightning, then the second like the wind, the third like a fast-running horse, the fourth like a rider on a camel, the fifth like a man running, and the sixth like a man walking."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2844)

On that day, the Bridge of Sirat (pul sirat) will be placed over the back of Hell (Jahannam), which will be finer than a hair and sharper than a sword, and people will cross over it according to the speed of their deeds. Thus, some will pass over it in a flash like lightning, and some will crawl and drag themselves across.

From this hadith, the existence of the Bridge of Sirat is established, and that everyone must cross over it. The righteous, due to their good deeds and by Allah’s mercy and grace, will cross it with ease, while the wicked will become entangled in the hooks of Hell and will be cast into the Fire.
