Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Umm al-Mu'minin, Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): What is your opinion about Allah’s statement: «﴿يَوْمَتُبَدَّلُالْأَرْضُغَيْرَالْأَرْضِوَالسَّمَاوَاتُ ....﴾» (Ibrahim: 48/14)? Where will the people be on that day? (Translation:) “On the Day when the earth will be changed to another earth, and the heavens (as well), and they (all) will appear before Allah, the One, the Irresistible.” Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he said: “(At that time, the people) will be on the Bridge (Sirat).”
(Explanation of Hadith 2843) Imam Shawkani rahimahullah has stated: In this noble verse, there are two possibilities regarding the meaning of the transformation of the earth. One is that this transformation will occur in terms of attributes, meaning that this heaven and earth will be changed with respect to their characteristics. The second is that this transformation will occur in essence, that is, neither this earth will remain nor this heaven; the earth will be something else and the heaven will be something else. It is mentioned in the hadith that on the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered on a white, barren land which will be like a loaf of fine flour bread. And Allah knows best.
