Hadith 2839

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When Allah Almighty (on the Day of Resurrection) will gather all the former and latter people and judge between them, and when He has finished judging, the believers will say: Who will intercede for us with our Lord? Let us go to Adam (peace be upon him), for Allah Almighty created him with His own hand and spoke to him. So they will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and say: Intercede for us with our Lord. Adam (peace be upon him) will say: Go to Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him). They will go to Nuh (peace be upon him), and he will direct them to Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him). The people will come to Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and he will direct them to Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). The people will come to Musa (peace be upon him), and he will send them to Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him). When they come to Isa (peace be upon him), he will say: I direct you to the unlettered Prophet." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people will come to me, and Allah Almighty will permit me to stand before Him. When I stand, such a pleasant fragrance will emanate from my place as perhaps no one has ever smelled before. I will reach my Lord, and He will accept my intercession, and He will fill me with light from the hair of my head to the nails of my feet. At that time, the disbelievers will say to Iblis: The believers have found such a person who intercedes for them, so you too get up and intercede for us with your Lord, for it was you who led us astray." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So he will stand, and from his place such a foul odor will emanate as perhaps no one has ever smelled before. Then he will be driven towards Hell. At that time, Satan will say: «﴿وَقَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ لَمَّا قُضِيَ الْأَمْرُ . . . . . .﴾» (Ibrahim: 22/14), Translation: When the matter is decided, Satan will say: Allah promised you a true promise, and I promised you but I broke my promise to you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me (that is, I cannot intercede for you, nor can you intercede for me to save me from Hell).... etc."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2838)

In this narration, the word «ثُمَّ يُعْطَمَ لِجَهَّمَ» is used; in some manuscripts of Sunan al-Darimi, it is «يَعْظُمُ نَحِيْبُهُمْ», meaning their weeping and wailing will increase. In some, it is «يومهم», in some «يومنهم», and in some places, the word «يوردهم» appears. The meaning of all is the same as written above. In fact, «يعطه» is not used in the Arabic language, but in the lexicon, «اعتطه الرجل» is found, meaning when one falls into destruction and ruin, the word «اعتظم» is used.

Many rulings are understood from this noble hadith: gathering in the plain of resurrection, Allah Ta'ala making the judgment, the greatness and honor of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), where all the prophets and messengers will refrain from intercession, Allah Ta'ala will grant the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permission for intercession: «﴿مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ﴾». The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) will intercede only for the believers, or for those who have even a mustard seed's weight of faith in their hearts, and this intercession will be after the people of Hell have entered Hell. The statement about being filled with light from head to toe refutes those who say the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is light (nur), because filling light with light has no meaning.

In this hadith, there is the conversation and confirmation of the accursed Shaytan's apology to his followers and his inability to intercede before Allah, which is mentioned in the Noble Qur'an.

This hadith also affirms that Allah Ta'ala speaks, which some sects deny.

May Allah Ta'ala grant us perfect faith and the intercession of the Master of the Worlds (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Ameen, O Lord of the Worlds.
