Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2823 to 2825)

There is great virtue in good character (husn al-akhlaq) in Islam. Here, by mentioning good character in the definition of righteousness (birr), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has, in a most eloquent manner, imparted the teaching of good deeds. Meeting others with a cheerful countenance and a smiling face, not causing harm to people but rather striving to bring them comfort and ease, assisting others and cooperating in acts of goodness, acting with generosity, obedience and following of Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam—all these are virtues and excellences that bring refinement to a person’s life.

And in the definition of evil and wrongdoing, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that evil is that which causes a prick in the heart, meaning that instead of contentment and joy, there is anxiety, unease, and restlessness; secondly, that a person would dislike others becoming aware of it. This is a very comprehensive definition of evil, which includes all minor and major sins.

This hadith is also evidence that human nature (fitrah)—if it has not been corrupted by a bad environment or evil company—guides a person towards what is right and restrains from evils.
