Hadith 2821

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who narrated from his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your Lord is very merciful. So whoever intends to do a good deed but does not act upon it, still a complete good deed is written for him. And if he acts upon his intention, then for him are written ten to seven hundred times as many good deeds, or even more. And whoever intends to do an evil deed but does not act upon it, still one good deed is written for him. And if he acts upon his intention, then only one evil deed is written for him. Allah, the Exalted, will erase even that, and no one will be destroyed with Allah except the one who brings about his own destruction (i.e., only the one whose fate is destruction and ruin will be destroyed)."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2820)

In this hadith, there is mention of Allah’s mercy and His love for His servants. If a person merely intends to do a good deed but does not act upon it, even then one good deed is recorded as a reward. And if he also performs the deed, then according to his sincerity, devotion to Allah, love, and desire, he is rewarded with ten to seven hundred times or even more than that for the good deeds—Subhan Allah, what a magnificent display of mercy! And not only this, if a person intends to commit an evil deed but refrains from acting upon it, even then one good deed is recorded as a reward.

Some scholars have said that what is meant by the intention of evil is that an evil thought comes to mind and then departs, and he does not make a firm resolve, nor does the evil settle in his heart; in such a case, there is no sin upon him. However, if he keeps the evil in his mind, plans for it, and then, due to some external reason, is unable to commit the sin, then its sin will certainly be recorded.
