Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah has divided mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Himself and sent down one part to the earth. It is from this one part that the creation shows mercy to one another, to the extent that a mare lifts its hoof away from its young out of fear that it might harm it."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2819)
It is stated in Ibn Hibban: With this one portion of mercy, humans, animals, beasts, and insects show mercy to one another, and Allah ta‘ala, due to this mercy, bestows sinners with all kinds of worldly necessities despite their disobedience and mischief and corruption. And on the Day of Resurrection, He will also show mercy, and after keeping in punishment for a short time, whoever has even the slightest amount of faith in his heart, He will remove him from Hell and admit him into Paradise.
The mercy and compassion of parents, humans, and animals towards their children is a well-known and perceptible matter, which can be observed even in birds and monkeys. Here, a mare’s mercy towards her foal to such a degree is a marvel of divine power, but among humans, there are so many hard-hearted ones who do not know how to show any mercy at all.
May Allah guide them, and may they take a lesson from the animals and show mercy to the creation of Allah. Also, a believing servant should remain between hope and fear.
Show kindness to the people of the earth, And God will be merciful to you on the Throne above.
