It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated in praising Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary), but rather say about me that I am Allah's servant and His Messenger."
Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2818)
«اطراء» linguistically means to exceed the limits while praising.
The Prophet of Islam strictly forbade this and explained that my rank is only as much as Allah Ta’ala has declared: that I am His servant and also His Messenger. So do not elevate me beyond this, nor exceed the limits in my praise. Servant of Allah, Messenger of Allah, Beloved of Allah, Friend (Khalil) of Allah, the noblest of the Prophets and Messengers—this is the extent of praise for you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Allah Ta’ala, in several places in the Noble Qur’an, has referred to you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, as His servant: « ﴿لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ﴾ [الجن : 19]», «﴿سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَى بِعَبْدِهِ﴾ [الإسراء : 1]», and you, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, were extremely pleased with this.
But in today’s era, in the recitation of eulogies (na‘t khwani), people go so far that they fall into shirk (associating partners with Allah), and some even go beyond the Christians, who made their Prophet the son of Allah.
Today’s so-called Muslim says:
He who was established on the Throne as God
Has descended to earth as Mustafa
«نَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ» If this is not shirk, then what is it? This is exactly what our Prophet, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, forbade.
Khawaja Altaf Husain rahimahullah has mentioned these teachings in a most charming manner; listen:
Do not be deceived like others
Do not make anyone the son of God
Do not elevate my rank beyond my limit
By elevating me too much, do not diminish me
All are humble there, just as
In the same way, I am also only His servant
Do not make my grave an idol
Do not bow your head at my grave
You are not less than me in being a servant
In helplessness, we are equal, you and I
Allah has granted me only this greatness
That I am His servant and also His messenger
