Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Which people are tested the most severely? (Who face the most calamities and hardships?) He replied: “The Prophets, then those who are best after them, then those who are best after them. A person is tested according to the strength of his religion; if he is strong and firm in his religion, his trial is made more severe and intense, and if there is softness and weakness in his heart, then the trial is lessened for him. And a servant continues to be afflicted (with pain, illness, poverty, grief) in this manner until he walks upon the earth and there remains no sin upon him.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2817)
That is, as a result of patience and gratitude in the face of calamities and afflictions, all his sins are forgiven, and those pains and hardships become an expiation (kaffarah) for him. It is thus understood that good, righteous, and pious servants of Allah are often afflicted with trials, hardships, and difficulties, and these should not be considered as Allah’s anger or displeasure. Rather, these pains and afflictions are an expiation for sins and mistakes. Therefore, a believer should remain content, satisfied, and pleased with the decree of Allah, and act with patience and gratitude.
There is another hadith: Allah Ta‘ala, when He intends good for someone, puts him through trials and illnesses.
[بخاري 5645].
This is a great glad tidings and good news for the believer, that by putting him through trials and difficulties in this world, Allah Ta‘ala completely purifies him, and in this state he meets Allah.
May Allah Ta‘ala grant us the ability to be patient and grateful in every hardship and difficulty, Ameen.
