Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2815)

The meaning of this hadith is that when a Muslim experiences something once and suffers harm, he does not get deceived again; he remains cautious, that is, "once bitten, twice shy."

Imam Khattabi rahimahullah said: This sentence is in the form of a statement, but it carries the meaning of a command. The meaning is that a believer should remain vigilant, so that no one deceives him in a moment of heedlessness. And this deception can occur in matters of religion or worldly affairs, therefore a believer should always be alert.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said this hadith at the time when a poet who used to satirize him was captured. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam released him on the condition that he would not satirize again, but he resumed causing harm. He was captured again and said that he would not do so again. At that point, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: «لَا يُلْدَغُ الْمُؤْمِنُ مِنْ جُحْرٍ وَاحِدٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ».
