Hadith 2813

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to hear from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not know whether these were the words of revelation that were sent down to him or his own words. He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "If a man has two valleys full of wealth, he will still seek a third valley, and nothing fills the belly of man except dust, and Allah turns with mercy to the one who repents."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2812)

In Sahih Muslim, it is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma in a similar manner that "I do not know whether this is from the Qur'an or not," and it is also narrated similarly from Sayyiduna Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu. From this, the importance of this hadith becomes clear, as well as the condemnation and dislike of the world, and the nature of man—that his belly is never filled; he is always wandering in search of "Is there any more?" until his belly is filled with death and dust.

Before the revelation of Surah Takathur, this phrase continued to be recited like the Qur'an, then when «﴿أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ﴾» was revealed, its recitation was abrogated. The subject matter is the same, in which the greed and covetousness of man is described.
