Sayyiduna Suhaib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting when suddenly he laughed and said: "Will you not ask me why I laughed?" The companions said: What makes you laugh? He said: "Every affair of the believer is amazing (pleasing). If something comes to him that he likes, he gives thanks to Allah, so there is goodness for him, meaning he is rewarded for it. And if something befalls him that he dislikes, he is patient, and there is goodness for him in that. And no one has this except the believer."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2811)
In this hadith, the characteristic of a believer is described: he remains content with the will of Allah in every circumstance, whether in happiness or in distress. When he attains happiness, he becomes deserving of reward by expressing gratitude (shukr); when calamity or hardship befalls him, he becomes deserving of reward by exercising patience (sabr). Thus, in no situation does he remain at a loss.
May Allah grant us the ability to be patient and grateful. Ameen.
