Sayyiduna Jubair bin Mut’im (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “I have several names: I am Muhammad, I am Ahmad, my name is Maahi, by whom Allah will erase disbelief, and I am Haashir, for all people will be gathered after me (on the Day of Resurrection), and I am ‘Aaqib (that is, the Seal of the Prophets), and ‘Aaqib is the one after whom there is no (prophet).”
The narration of Sahih Bukhari is: “I have five names,” and then the same names are mentioned as are mentioned in the above hadith. The personal names of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are Muhammad and Ahmad. The attributive names, such as Bashir (Bearer of glad tidings), Nadhir (Warner), Mubin (Clear), Amin (Trustworthy), etc., are many, which are mentioned in the Qur’an and Hadith. There is no restriction of ninety-nine names; they can be more than a hundred as well. And “Muhammad” refers to one who praises Allah greatly, which applies to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam with complete perfection in both this world and the Hereafter.
Some people have fabricated ninety-nine (99) names for the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, equal to the ninety-nine names of Allah, which is sheer affectation and baselessness.
Indeed, Allah ta’ala and His Messenger have numerous attributive names, but their number is a matter of consideration.
