Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whenever any Muslim among the Muslims is afflicted with a physical illness, Allah Almighty commands the angels appointed for his protection to continue writing the deeds of every day and night that he used to do (in a state of health), as long as he remains confined in My bondage (illness).”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2804) This too is among the grace, favor, mercy, and justice of Allah Ta’ala, that in a state of illness, if one is unable to perform voluntary (nafl) prayers or other good deeds, then for him, the prayers and other good deeds continue to be recorded just as he used to perform them in a state of health. «﴿ذَلِكَفَضْلُاللّٰهِيُؤْتِيهِمَنْيَشَاءُ﴾ [الجمعة :4]» . And in [بخاري شريف 2996] it is stated: When a servant becomes ill or travels, then for him, deeds similar to those he used to perform while residing and in good health are written for him. Subhan Allah! What a favor from Allah! It should be clear that what is meant here are such righteous deeds which a Muslim performs as recommended (mustahabb) and voluntary (nafl) acts; otherwise, the fulfillment of obligatory (fard) acts is necessary in every circumstance.
