Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Fever is from the steam of Hell or from the boiling of Hell, so cool it with water.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2803)

By this is meant the fever that arises due to the agitation of yellow bile (safra’). In such cases, bathing with cold water or washing the hands and feet is beneficial. Modern medicine has also acknowledged this; the use of ice in cases of severe fever is of the same category. Furthermore, there is a branch of contemporary medicine—hydrotherapy—that is also quite advanced. Our Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was sent by Allah Ta’ala as a treasure of all beneficial knowledge. Thus, the principles presented by him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the field of medicine are so comprehensive that no intelligent person can refute them.
