Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Qirt (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Indeed, you commit such acts which, in your eyes, are finer than a hair (i.e., you consider them insignificant and do not regard them as major sins), but during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to consider them extremely destructive.”
When this was mentioned to Muhammad bin Sirin, he said: “‘Ubada has spoken the truth, and I think that letting the lower garment hang down is among those destructive sins.”
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2802)
One should not consider even the smallest sin insignificant; a minor sin (saghira) can, by accumulating, become a major sin (kabira). Drop by drop, a pit is filled. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to regard even minor sins as destructive and would avoid them.
Today, Muslims do not even care about major sins (kabair): fornication, theft, drinking alcohol, lying, backbiting—even failing to fulfill obligatory duties (wajibat) does not bring them any shame. How many Muslims will you find who only perform the Friday (Jumu‘ah) prayer, and how many unfortunate ones are there who suffice only with the Eid prayer, yet still consider themselves Muslims.
May Allah grant them guidance, ameen.
Letting the lower garment (izar) hang below the ankles is among the major sins (kabair), and there are stern warnings in the noble ahadith for such a person. The Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: «وَمَاأَسْفَلَمِنَالْكَعْبَيْنِفَهُوَفِيالنَّارٍ.»
